GLASS HALF-FULL PEOPLE
The expression glass “half full” is used to refer to the optimists since they tend to look on the bright side.
They are always hopeful and tend to see the good side even in bad or stressful situations.
When describing a glass as half-full, it means that there is some water to drink.
This illustrates that these people believe that the world is a better place to live in and despite the challenges, things will work out in the end.
This does not, however, mean that these people never doubt themselves, but instead they believe that they can change things and make them good.
They also learn a lesson from every positive thing and learn to avoid it in the future.
The most important thing is that optimistic people have positive thinking which enables them to acknowledge the little they have and make it useful instead of complaining about or creating a problem.
GLASS HALF EMPTY PEOPLE
On the other hand, the expression glass half empty refers to the pessimists who see the negative side.
This explains why they use the expression half empty to show that there is water missing.
Although most pessimists claim to be realists, they tend to see a black cloud behind every unseen benefit.
They tend first seeing the negative side of every situation before the positive.
Pessimists also find reasons why they should not try something either because of fear or over-cautiousness hence they end up missing out on opportunities.
Their negative thinking causes them to complain about everything and fail to acknowledge what they have.
Half Full vs Empty Challenges
In life, everyone faces obstacle but what makes the difference is how we respond.
Having the glass as half-full is a better option because expecting good things will lead to taking actions that yield positive results.
People who see the glass as half empty expect bad situations to happen to them, and this discourages them from doing things that might have prevented or minimised these negative situations.
In other words, optimists see obstacles as opportunities while pessimists see them as hindrances that prevent them from achieving positive results.
Their failure to respond to these hindrances leads to negative results.
This, therefore, means that those who see the glass as half full are likely to achieve positive results despite the challenges while those who see the glass as half empty will achieve negative consequences because they failed to embrace the challenges.
According to scientists, those who see the glass as half full tend to be healthier, happier and wealthier because of their positive attitude.
Additionally, the word optimism is derived from a Greek word “optima“ which means the best outcome or belief in the greatest good.
It is, therefore, better to see the glass as half full because most benefits are likely to be achieved when one has a positive mindset.
Although it is not easy to see the lighter side of things, it is helpful.
To develop and gain from positive thinking, one must, however, avoid pessimists and change the way we view situations and problems since we will learn and discover hidden resources or opportunities that we never knew existed.
We must also have the courage to face the scariest situations and manage to get out of our comfort zones.
